Split a project into subprojects and categories¶
What this is for¶
A hierarchy lets you split an undertaking into smaller projects with their own tasks. Categories group main projects in the list, and a parent's summaries cover the whole branch.
How to get there¶
Choose Goals & Projects → Projects (/projects). The menu next to a project
offers Add subproject and Edit.
Step by step¶
- Next to the parent project, open the menu and choose Add subproject.
- Choose New project, enter a Name and confirm with Create. If you want to move an existing project, choose Existing project, pick Project to assign and click Assign project.
- To change the parent, choose Edit, expand the additional options, set Parent project and click Save. No parent · main project moves the project to the main level.
- For a main project, choose a Category in the edit form and save. You open the Project categories catalog through Manage project categories in Settings.
- Expand a branch in the list. In the parent's details, turn on Include subprojects to include their tasks as well.
Fields and options¶
| Option | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Parent project | One parent; the list excludes the project itself and its descendants. |
| Existing project | Assigning keeps the tasks and settings of the moved project. |
| Category | Category of a main project; the interface uses this name for project labels. |
| New category, Color | Name and color in the Project categories window. |
| Project Color | A new subproject initially takes the parent's color until you choose your own. |
| Work project | Work classification, inherited from the parent project. |
| Include subprojects | Extends the task scope in the details to descendants. |
You can reorder subprojects by dragging them in the Project structure section in the parent's details. The parent's progress covers the branch's tasks; the work cycle is described in statuses.
Common mistakes / pitfalls¶
- You cannot set a project as its own ancestor.
- Choosing an existing subproject hides finished projects and projects already assigned directly to the selected parent.
- After you set a parent, the project category field is cleared; do not assign a category to each subproject separately.
- A repeated category name shows a conflict message.
- Changing the parent of an existing project keeps its current color.
