Choose a task, goal, habit, or tracker¶
What this is for¶
A task describes a specific activity, while a goal collects the work leading to a result. A habit defines a repeatable activity; a tracker records single occurrences of what you want to observe. The choice depends on whether you plan work or record an event.
How to get there¶
- Planning → Tasks:
/tasks. - Goals & Projects → Goals:
/goals. - Personal → Habits, Tracker, Timers:
/habits,/tracker,/timers.
The items under Personal depend on the visibility settings in Settings → Panels.
Step by step¶
- For a single activity, open Planning → Tasks (
/tasks). - For a result that requires a series of actions, open Goals and choose New Goal. Add goal steps.
- For a repeatable activity, open Habits, choose New Habit, then move occurrences into your plan with Add to week; see habits.
- For an event to count, open Tracker and click an item. Each click records a separate occurrence.
Fields and options¶
| Area | What you record | What next |
|---|---|---|
| Tasks | A specific activity | You plan it and mark it done. |
| Goals | A result and linked tasks | You choose one next step. |
| Habits | Frequency and duration of an activity | You pick occurrences to add to the week. |
| Tracker | A dated occurrence of an item | You analyze the history in Tracker Insights. |
| Timers | A run from start to deadline | You end it manually with Finish; see timers. |
For work with a hierarchy and several task groups, use a project.
Common mistakes / pitfalls¶
- Creating a habit and adding its occurrences to the calendar are separate actions.
- A tracker occurrence is not a task to complete. Another click increases the number of records instead of changing a completion state.
- A goal without a date stays in Someday. Its steps can be planned separately.
