Break down a goal and choose the next step¶
What this is for¶
A goal links an expected result with the tasks and projects that lead to it. The next step points to one specific activity you can plan right away.
How to get there¶
Choose Goals & Projects → Goals (/goals) and click a goal card.
Step by step¶
- In Goals choose New Goal, enter a Name and choose a Goal type. For a plain list of steps, leave it as Standard.
- Optionally set a Target date (optional), expand More options and fill in a description, priority or reward. Choose Create.
- Open the goal card and choose Add Task in the tasks section. Enter a name and a duration; the date is optional. Save the form.
- In Choose next step (optional) point to an unfinished task of the goal or a linked project, including a subproject. A goal has at most one next step.
- Click the name of the pointed task to open its details, or choose Plan for today to put it in today's plan.
- After completing a step, choose the next one. No next step clears the choice.
Fields and options¶
| Field or option | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Goal type | Standard, Books or Weight; how progress is counted depends on the type. |
| Target date (optional) | The goal's deadline. Goals are grouped by year; without a deadline they go to Someday. |
| Description, Reward, Category | Description, optional reward and category in More options. |
| Priority | None, Low, Medium, High. |
| Status | In editing: Planned, Active, Paused, Completed, Dropped. |
| Hide closed, Sort by | Hiding closed goals; sorting by progress, name or deadline. |
| Projects | Linked projects; their tasks and subprojects can contribute to a standard goal's progress. |
On the card and in the details, the next step shows its name, duration and project if the task belongs to one. The choice is saved in account settings and applies to standard goals in the web app.
Common mistakes / pitfalls¶
- An empty name blocks creating the goal.
- After a step is completed or removed, the app prompts you to choose a new one; it does not choose automatically. Detaching a project also removes its task from the available choices.
- Dragging a goal to another year changes the deadline's year. A goal without a deadline gets December 31 of that year; you cannot drag a goal to Someday.
- Creating a Weight goal requires a first measurement in Body. Changing a goal with assigned books to Standard requires removing those links first.
